Position Description for Advisory Council Members

Please note: membership on the Institute's Advisory Council only signifies the individual's support for the principles embodied in the Mission of the Institute, and under no circumstances may or should be construed as an endorsement of, or signify an individual's personal agreement with, any particular lifestyle choice or practice. Any affiliations noted are strictly for the purposes of identification, and do not imply support for, or endorsement of, the Institute, its programs or policies by any organization or entity so noted.  


Article VIII, Section 1 of the Bylaws of the Institute sets forth the general responsibilities of the Advisory Council:

“[T]o advise the Board and President and CEO with respect to matters relating to research practices and standards, development of educational materials, editorial policies of publications of the Institute, publication of ancillary materials, and any other matters as may be determined by the Board.”

Depending on their area of expertise, availability, and professional position, individual Advisory Council Members may therefore be called upon to:

Review Institute publications prior to release

Assist by writing articles, monographs, booklets or other pieces for dissemination under the aegis of the Institute

Advise the Board of Directors and staff of the Institute on standards for academic publication and presentation of papers in other fora

Attend and present/speak at, to the extent possible, Institute conferences and symposia

Recommend, and assist in recruiting, other prominent individuals for the Advisory Council

Assist in the judging of materials submitted for the Institute’s research awards program

Recommend, and provide assistance with where possible, individual and institutional sources of funding for Institute projects and programs

Set an example by personally supporting the work of the Institute financially in proportion to their means and circumstances

Promote the programs and the image of the Institute wherever possible and appropriate

Assist in formulating and publicizing the research priorities of the Institute

Where possible and ethical, inform student researchers about the Institute’s research priorities and seek to encourage appropriate research in these directions

Permit the listing of the Council member’s name and professional affiliation (for identification only) as a member of the Institute’s Advisory Council on all appropriate Institute materials

Provide any other advice and assistance reasonably possible in support of the mission and objectives of the Institute

Advisory Council members serve at the pleasure of the Institute’s Board of Directors, without compensation.  However, the Board may approve reimbursement for reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred by Council members while working on behalf of the Institute under policies and procedures established by the Board.
